If your mom recently had a stroke and she’s planning on recovering at home, it’s important that she isn’t alone during her recovery period. According to the American Stroke Association approximately 1 in 4 people who have a stroke will have another stroke. And the most common period for the second stroke to happen is during recovery from the first. That’s why your mom should have 24-hour home care during her recovery. Most adult children can’t be with their mom around the clock, even after a stroke.

With 24-hour home care, someone will always be awake, alert, and checking on your mom to make sure she’s ok. If something happens and your mom does have a second stroke if she has 24-hour home a caregiver can get her immediate medical help.

But the risk of another stroke isn’t the only reason why your mom shouldn’t be recovering at home alone. During her recovery your mom is going to be unable to do things that have to get done or do things like:

Strenuous Physical Activity

During recovery your mom should be very careful to only do activity that has been recommended by her doctor. She may be able to do some physical and occupational therapy to help her recovery.

But she shouldn’t do strenuous activities like doing laundry, vacuuming, cooking meals, taking out the trash, or other household chores. A home care provider can help your mom by taking care of all the difficult household chores so your mom can focus on recovery.

Remembering Medications

Your mom is probably on new medications as a result of the stroke in addition to the medications she was on before. And her memory might not be great right now. Your mom should have a care provider that can remind her when it’s time to take her medications and how to take them. That way you can be sure that she won’t skip or miss doses of the medications she needs.

Cooking Healthy Meals

While your mom is recovering it’s not going to be safe for her to be in the kitchen trying to cook meals for herself. But it’s also not healthy for her to be eating take out all the time. A 24-hour home care provider can do the grocery shopping and cook healthy nutritious meals for your mom. Eating healthy balanced meals will support your mom’s immune system and help her recovery.

Keeping Up Hygiene

Your mom may need extra help getting in and out of bed, showering, and getting dressed during her recovery. But it’s important that she do those things. Showering regularly, getting dressed each day, and getting back to a normal routine will help your mom’s recovery.

Personal care at home can help your mom with these delicate tasks. The care providers that work in personal care have special training so they can help seniors shower, brush their teeth, get dressed, and get out of bed safely.
