Finding ways to improve senior care means focusing on what would benefit the elderly patient. There’s no right or wrong answer that is going to encompass every senior who requires some level of assistance in their life. However, one of the common denominators to having a high quality of life in those later years is having a strong memory and mental functioning.
The brain is a muscle, just like any other muscle in the body (okay, so it’s not like any other muscle, but the concept underlying this statement is true). Without exercise, it cannot reach its full potential. The more you give your brain the exercise that it craves and needs, the stronger it will become. No matter how old a person is, it’s never too late to get those synapses fired up.
When a person doesn’t have to worry or struggle to remember certain things, it can improve their overall life. When it comes to senior care services, when you can help someone improve their memory or strengthen their mind, it will have a positive impact in other areas of their life as well.
Two activities that can strengthen the mind for seniors (and for everyone else as well) are playing a certain card game and doing puzzles.
Concentration is a simple card game that can be played with multiple players or by yourself. Take a regular deck of playing cards, shuffle them, and lay them all out face down on a table in neat rows. The object is for each player to turn over two cards, revealing what they are. When the two cards are the same (ie., two jacks or two 4’s), then the player gets to take them off the table and keep them. They have scored one match. It’s important to pay attention to what cards get turned over so that you can match up cards more easily on your next turn.
Puzzles can include jigsaw puzzles or even word games, such as the crossword. Trying to solve puzzles can take a moderate to high level of thought and concentration and that means the senior would be using his or her brain in a concentrated effort. If they choose to get involved with crossword puzzles, it’s important to realize that they may not get a lot of the words right in the beginning, as it takes some time to get used to the layout, style, and premise. The important thing is to keep working at them.
These are just two simple activities that can actually help to improve senior care. When you come up with new ones that work, be willing to share them with others who provide senior care services as well.
