A great way to start off the new year right is for seniors to take the time to organize their medications. January is Get Organized Month and seniors can take advantage of that to make sure that their medications and prescriptions are as organized as possible. That will make it easier for seniors who are aging at home to keep their medications straight and avoid making mistakes when taking their medications.
When medications are all organized, it’s also easier to see which ones are running low and need to be refilled. Seniors can get help from in-home care to call in prescriptions, organize medications, and make sure that they are taking their medications on time. In-home care helps seniors with a lot of tasks around the house including medication management.
Tips that seniors can use to organize their medications include:
Use A Calendar System
One way that seniors can keep track of when prescriptions are due is to use a calendar system. Whenever a medication is filled write it on the calendar on the day it was filled then move the calendar forward to write down the date it needs to be refilled. An in-home care provider can call in any refills to the pharmacy. That way refills will always be called in early and your senior parent won’t run out of their medication or run into refill hassles.
Color Code Bottles
Another way that seniors can organize their medicine is to use colored stickers to color code the bottles. Medicines that need to be taken in the morning can have a certain color, medicines that need to be taken with food another color, and so on. That way seniors will be able to tell that the requirements are for each medication even if they can’t read the print on the medicine bottles. Color coding is a good way to make pill taking easier for seniors who have visual impairments, especially if they use neon or high contrast colors that are easy to see.
Get Premade Packets
Seniors can get premade packets for each day of the week that have all of their medications in them. Then they just need to open that day’s packet and take those pills. Premade packets can be very handy for seniors who have trouble tracking their medications. And they make medication management very easy because seniors don’t need to worry about refills or making sure they are taking the right medications.
Get A Pill Dispenser
There are many different types of pill dispensers that range from very basic to extremely complex. But all the pill dispensers have one common feature that makes them extremely useful for seniors. At set times of the day the dispenser will remind seniors to take their medications then dispense the medications so that seniors don’t have to worry about remembering to take their pills. And with an automatic dispenser even if your senior parent is alone they will still get a reminder that it’s time to take their meds.
