One out of every three older adults reports feeling lonely. The same number of adults also report being alone, with family members and friends only stopping by no more than once a week. How often do people visit your dad? It could be time to make sure he has in-home care aides to provide the companionship he needs.

What Is In-Home Care?

In-home care is a service where an aide comes to help out with the services arranged during the initial conversation. Plans are customized to your dad’s needs, and they change if his health changes. There are several services available from home care specialists.

  • Housekeeping: Caregivers vacuum, sweep, wash dishes, dust, take out the trash and recycling, make beds, tidy up, water houseplants, and clean counters and other hard services.
  • Laundry: Caregivers wash clothing, sheets, towels, and other linens, make sure everything is dry, irons if needed, and put items away.
  • Errands: Caregivers help your dad run errands, such as going to the bank, picking up packages at the USPS or other agencies like FedEx and UPS, and picking up prescription refills.
  • Grocery Shopping: Caregivers help your dad make a list of items he needs at the grocery store and shop online or in the store to get everything he needs.
  • Companionship: Your dad has an aide with him to play games, work on his favorite hobby, go for walks around the neighborhood, sit with him while he eats, and enjoy talking to.
  • Personal Care: Your dad’s caregiver helps with showers, nail care, haircare, shaving, oral care, toileting, skin care, and other routines for grooming and hygiene.
  • Meals: His caregiver helps him plan a weekly menu and cook the meals or prepares snacks when your dad is ready to eat.
  • Medication Reminders: If your dad often forgets to take his pills, his caregiver can remind him and make sure they’re taken with a meal, glass of water, or empty stomach.
  • Scheduling and Organization: Your dad has a hard time making appointments, especially if the practice uses online or automated phone scheduling. His caregiver is there to help out, and can also help him organize his calendar, mail, and household papers to make sure everything is where he expects it to be.
  • Transportation: Finally, your dad’s caregiver is there to drive him to stores, area businesses, senior centers and community centers for social events, and appointments with his barber, dentist, or any medical providers.

How Do You Get Started?

Talk to a specialist in home care to learn more. Have a list of questions ready when you make the call or email the agency. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to get answers, ask additional questions, and learn more about how to choose the best home care services for your dad.

In-home care aides keep your dad company when he needs it. He’s not alone anymore, and a caregiver is with him for walks, movies, TV shows, or help with hobbies and errands. Arrange in-home care and ensure your dad has companionship and support when he needs it.
