Moving in with your aging adult, or having her move in to your home with you, is a viable solution when you’re a family caregiver. But the move often comes with some issues you might not anticipate until you’re in pretty deep. It’s a good idea to do some pre-planning if you can.
Plan Ahead as Much as Possible
The more that you plan ahead, the better off you’ll both be in this situation. Look at where you and your senior will be living together and determine what needs to be modified in order for her or you to be comfortable. Make sure that everyone has enough living space and that you know as much as possible about how this is going to work.
Talk about Boundaries
One of the biggest ways for you to plan ahead is to talk about some boundaries ahead of time. Very often your senior has one vision about how this will go and you have a completely different one. If your elderly family member expects that you’ll eat every meal together, but you know that won’t be happening that’s a boundary that you need to discuss now rather than later. This can help you both to avoid some hurt feelings and some misunderstandings.
Get Help Now
Putting you and your senior in the same location is likely going to make some situations a lot easier for you both to manage, but it doesn’t mean that you won’t need help. Line up some elderly care providers now to provide assistance. They can help you to fill in some gaps in care that you might not see just yet. They can also help you both to transition to this new living situation.
Reevaluate the Situation Regularly
Periodically it will help for you and your senior to talk about what’s working and what isn’t. This gives you a chance to put solutions in place before the situation gets out of hand. Call these family meetings or something else, but make sure you’re having the conversations.
Living with your aging family member when you haven’t done that in a long time, or ever, can be a big shift for both of you. Give each other time to adjust and to try to make the best of the situation. There are going to be times that are trying, so just remember to breathe and to be gentle with yourself.
