As a family caregiver, the care you give your aging parent during each stage of Alzheimer’s disease will make a tremendous impact on their health, safety, well-being, and quality of life as they age in place. Preparing for this care earlier in the disease gives you greater confidence, and helps you to feel secure in making the right decisions for your senor throughout the progression. During the middle stage of Alzheimer’s disease, the challenges and symptoms of the disease will become more severe, and they will be in need of further care.
Some ways you can care for an elderly adult who is in the middle stage of Alzheimer’s disease include:
- Increase elder care to provide further supervision and support, especially a senior who has wandering tendencies
- Help your parent find the right incontinence products for them, and create a respectful, dignified, and healthy approach to handling these symptoms, including bladder training
- Encourage your parent to use personal GPS to reduce the danger for a senior who has wandering tendencies
- Encourage your parent to participate in a support group to help them cope with emotional issues, suspicions, and other changes
- Allow your parent to make decisions on a regular basis, even if they are with your support. For example, show the two complete outfits and have them choose which they want to wear
- Increase security around the home, such as adding more locks near the top and bottoms of the doors, and alarms on the windows, to prevent dangerous wandering
- Establish a sleep schedule and encourage your parent to follow it regularly so they get better sleep
- Find ways to distract your parent and keep their mind active to reduce repetitive or compulsive behaviors
