Caregiving sometimes leaves you feeling as if you don’t have your own life any longer. If that’s the case for you, it’s time to do what you can to reclaim your life as much as possible.
Remember Your Dreams and Goals
When you’re crazy busy and have a lot of responsibilities that you’re managing for other people it’s difficult to hold onto what you really want to do. Taking the time to remind yourself about your dreams and your goals can help you to jump start those plans again. Your goals and your dreams are what keep you going and give you a purpose behind everything that you do.
Practice Being Present
Running from one task and one activity to the next is not a solid recipe for being present. In order to do this, try to avoid multitasking and stick with the moment you’re in. This can take a bit of practice, considering most of life now involves doing as much as you can all in one fell swoop. Sometimes you have to slow down in order to speed up.
Beef up Your Support Network
What does your support network look like? You might have friends and family members who are willing to help and are able to lend you an ear when you need one. Support groups can also be a vital component of helping you to learn what you need to know as a family caregiver. Having home care providers that you trust allows you to spend time with other people when you need to do so. If you don’t have this type of support network, you might need to look into ways to include more of these types of people and solutions in your caregiving journey.
Take Time Away
Besides being present while you’re caring for your aging adult the next most useful step for you to take is having time away from caregiving altogether. Just like a math problem that stumps you, working on something else for a little while can free up your brain. Ideally, you’re going to spend the time you have away doing whatever helps you to recharge and to feel your best again.
There’s no one set formula that works for every caregiver, but you need to look at what you’re doing and what needs to change. Making those changes gives you a stronger foothold in formulating a self-care plan that works for you.
