It was not an easy thing to think about, but when my mother’s doctor told us that she required some level of home care services, or that she would need to move into a nursing home, I knew there was going to be a lot of work to do. Or at least that’s what I thought initially.
My sister and I live not too far from our mother and at first we thought about splitting the care that she would need between us. We looked into what it would mean for us to be a caregiver to her, and then decided to look into in home health care services. Since we didn’t know a thing about them, we thought they would be exceedingly expensive. Boy, were we wrong.
The first thing that we learned when we started to contact different home health care services agencies was that there are many different types of care that can be provided to our mother. She didn’t need someone to move into her home and live with her. At least not yet and we wanted to keep it that way for as long as possible.
We also learned that she would be able to meet with her potential in home care provider to make sure that she would get along with this woman. So the next thing we did was that we sat down with our mother and went over all of the different options that we have come upon, and the two agencies within her community that could offer the level of care that she required.
She asked us why we couldn’t just check in on her from time to time, so we had to explain that we certainly would do that, but that her doctor had told her it was time to have someone with experience and knowledge in assisting people of her age and diminishing physical capabilities.
We finally got her to (reluctantly) agree to meet with a few people from the one agency that we felt most comfortable with, and immediately my mother began to smile. “I like her,” she whispered to me as we were leaving. It was as simple as that to decide on which home care services agency and in home care provider to choose.
I’m sure it’s not always the same for everyone, but for my mother, it was a good decision and the fact that she was able to meet with a potential provider before hiring anyone was a great benefit. It eased her mind as well as ours.
