Some skin conditions come and go – they are annoying while they’re here but eventually disappear, like teenage acne. Other skin problems can be quite troublesome and need to be seen by a dermatologist, to get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan, like adult acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema and skin tags.
What are some of the common skin conditions of older adults?
Eczema. This is a very itchy condition, and looks like patches of red skin with little bumps. Eczema can flare up for a few days or longer and then disappear almost as suddenly. It is an inflammation and commonly appears on the arms or hands, and behind the knees.
- Eczema often accompanies dry skin.
- There could be a connection between dry skin and misfiring of the immune system.
- Some irritants of eczema are hot baths, cigarette smoke, soaps and dust.
- It helps to keep skin moisturized and wear cotton clothing.
- There are some creams the doctor may prescribe.
Rosacea. Most commonly appears on the cheeks and nose but sometimes it also develops around the mouth and eyes. It exhibits a red, flushing appearance and sometimes has small, red bumps.
- Rosacea is an inflammation of the skin
- Sometimes triggered by hot drinks or hot food, sunlight, alcohol, temperature changes.
- Avoiding triggers helps calm rosacea. Sometimes oral or topical antibiotics are prescribed to combat the bacteria living in the skin.
Adult Acne. This can have a number of causes including stress, bacteria, fluctuating hormones.
- Looks like white or large red bumps. Usually targets the face.
- Acne is a type of skin inflammation which occurs when the natural oils over-produce and clog the pores. Then bacteria moves in and inhabits the pores.
- Doctor may prescribe a topical treatment.
Psoriasis
- This painful skin condition causes patches on the skin that are thick and red with silver-colored scales. Psoriasis causes skin to grow rapidly and is found on the scalp and nail; also seen on the elbows, knees and lower back areas.
- Psoriasis may get worse or better. Unfortunately it never goes away.
- Medical treatments can help with the symptoms.
Skin tags. These are non-cancerous and can appear almost anywhere. They are common in skin folds like underarms, eyelids, etc.
- Places that have friction are more likely to develop skin tags
- They are mostly harmless, just bothersome and irritating.
- If necessary a dermatologist can remove them.
It’s nice to have skin that’s in good working condition and free of irritants, so try to catch problems early on and get them taken care of before they turn into something more serious.
