Your dad’s grandchildren are important to him, but it’s hard to find ways for them to be interested in the things he enjoys. Here are some of the best ways to have Father’s Day fun as a family.
Head to a Fun Park or Museum
Your dad would love to join his grandchildren for a day at a fun park, zoo, or other outdoor attraction. Make a day of it and pick an attraction where all ages have something to do.
If the weather is rainy, you could go to a children’s museum, aquarium, or science museum instead. Make sure people stop to rest as often as your dad needs to.
Pack a Picnic
Your dad’s always talking about the lake he took you to as a child. Pack a picnic and get everyone to meet you there. Don’t tell him where he’s going. Make sure it’s a surprise. If everyone brings one of his favorite sandwiches, chips, salads, or snacks, you won’t have to remember to pack everything.
Go to the Beach
Gather the family, pack a picnic, and go to the beach. While the kids play in the water, your dad can sit in a beach chair and watch them. If he’d rather join them in the water, that’s an option, too.
Make sure you bring sunscreen and a sun hat to protect him from burning. Some companies specialize in swimwear and lightweight clothing that protects against UVA and UVB rays. It’s worth getting swim pants and a T-shirt made of this material if he wants to spend time in the water.
Have a Backyard BBQ
Arrange a backyard BBQ where your dad has everyone around and a hearty meal. If everyone brings a side or beverage and meats that can be grilled, your dad will not have to do or get anything. He simply needs to bring himself.
Consider bringing games that your dad can manage. He might love playing croquet or cornhole. There are also outdoor games like ladderball that all ages can play.
If you’ve never seen the game ladderball, it’s played on a ladder-like frame with three rungs. Take turns tossing the tennis balls that are connected by a section of rope and try to get the balls to wrap around the rung.
What Happens Outside of Special Days or Holidays?
Outside of Father’s Day, how often do you spend time with your dad? While some family caregivers are nearby, many are hours away. Home care assistance is a great way to support him in the way he needs, without having to go out of your way to be at his home more often.
Home care assistance services are available to help your dad out when you’re not there. Call a home care specialist to learn more.
