You may have heard of #smallbusinesssaturday, but did you know there is an entire week set aside to raise awareness of supporting small businesses? April 30-May 6 is National Small Business Week. This week recognizes the important contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners.
If your loved one or your family has a heart for small businesses, or perhaps even own one yourself, this is a great week to be intentional about making your purchases from small businesses in your area and trying out new places. Your home care provider might even enjoy participating in this mission as he provides transportation for your loved one to local shops and businesses.
Here are some easy substitutions you can do together as you work toward supporting small businesses in your area this week.
Restaurants
If your loved one likes to go out to eat each week, this could be a great week to do a bit of research into what locally owned and operated restaurants are in his area. So, instead of heading to his favorite big chain restaurant, look at those little restaurants tucked into strip malls or in home-like buildings in neighborhoods. It can prove to be a bit more adventurous eating, but your loved one may find a new favorite place to have that weekly lunch with his home care provider or other friends.
Stores and shops
If your loved one needs to purchase some home goods this week, visiting a smaller shop that’s a small business may find him really enjoying the personal touch a small business can provide over walking through cavernous long hallways with products up too high to reach or see, and employees who may not be experts in the product he needs to buy.
It’s true that sometimes the price can be a bit more when purchasing products from a small business but many people find it’s worth it for the customer service and expert advice they can learn to rely on.
Groceries
A big chain grocery store may make life a bit more simpler, but finding fresh produce from a local farmer’s market or picking up some freshly butchered steak from a local butcher shop may bring a lot more excitement into making a meal at home, all while supporting a local small business person or farmer. And going to a farmer’s market with his home care provider on a Friday morning can be a great way to kick off the weekend.
Locally sourced foods often have other health benefits as well, as they are less likely to contain preservatives or be artificially ripened.
There are plenty of small businesses in most towns offering just about every service your loved one and you need. It’s just a matter of taking a break from the big names you know and looking for smaller businesses. Investing in them is investing in your community as a whole, and what’s better than that?
